Counting with Thiebaud

by Ashley on April 21, 2011

While we were on vacation, we picked up this cute book, Counting with Wayne Thiebaud, in St. Helena, California.

Wayne Thiebaud’s paintings remind me of being a student at UC Davis, where I would pass the artist in the halls on the way to studio classes (though I was probably more interested in passing by Aron at the time). His landscapes–of San Francisco‚Äôs hilly streets and of the Sacramento valley–may actually be my favorites, though I love how the thick oil paint in his dessert series so perfectly mimics frosting. It seemed like the perfect souvenir from a pre-baby trip to California, and something special from our past to share with our little guy.

I love Thiebaud. I saw one of his exhibits a couple years ago. Beautiful colors, perfect subject matter for babies and kids!

we love this book. thiebaud is one of my favorite artists. and the previous book you mentioned, seasons. curiously enough, we just finished reading it moments ago. the whole family on the bed. i had seen it at the library a couple times, but passed it up for its lack of “story”. (now that calder’s older i struggle with the light-on-text books.) however, it caught my husband’s eye the last time he was there, so we’ve had it at the house for a couple weeks. contrary to my first impression, i have found it to be quite wonderful. the images are great, the collection of things/feelings/events highlighted is unique and holds our interest. and there is, without a doubt, a story told of an entire year’s worth of experiences and observations. a really neat book.

also, thank you for your comment. it’s nice to hear from people who find my little online space.

So glad to hear that you would recommend both! Thank you!
(And I love the name Calder–beautiful!)

My daughter has this book, too. We love it! The publisher, Chronicle Books, has some great titles for babies and kids. I first saw Thiebaud’s work while I was living in San Francisco some years back. The book is definitely a great souvenir from the Bay area/Northern California!

So glad to hear! Chronicle does put out beautiful products–I’ll have to keep more of an eye out for their kids’ products.
